Good Reasons now selling in Whole Foods Market
Whole Foods Market (WFM) in Danbury, CT is really barking up the right tree. Known for their standard as “America’s Healthiest Grocery StoreTM”, the world leader in natural and organic foods has added a new, and very special, product to the shelf (or pack, as we like to say).
Good ReasonsTM dog treats are now available for purchase at WFM’s Danbury store located on Sugar Hollow Road, flaunting top-notch, human-grade ingredients like cheddar cheese, peanut butter, oatmeal, green peas, and applesauce to name a few. The Westchester, NY non-profit is 100% mission driven, and committed to providing individuals with disabilities the opportunity for employment in an integrated and supportive work environment.
According to The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the percentage of working-age people with disabilities in the labor force is about one-third that of persons with no disability.
Each bag of Good Reasons dog treats is baked and packed with love by individuals who are receiving a pay check, and a ‘job well done’, for the very first time.
What drew the duo together? The birth of the millennial generation seems to be leading businesses and organizations, both big and small, into a more thoughtful, civic-minded era. WFM and Good Reasons are living proof of the heartfelt and community conscious shift in consumerism and are paying dividends to spread the word.
CEO and founder of Good Reasons, Vicki Sylvester recalls the exact moment she decided to pitch the six-tasty dog treats (with recipes derived from a local chef and Culinary Institute of America graduate) to WFM. “I was drawn to this beautiful, and very spirited quote on their website. I immediately identified with the brand and said to myself ‘THAT is where I want to sell our treats.’
The quote was from Amelia Pape, a WFM Team Member and Founder of My Street Grocery – a mobile grocery store focused on improving access to fresh, healthy food for all. “Food is community. Food brings people together. It’s a language when you can’t speak the same language; it’s the way that we celebrate milestones and show love; that’s the bigger picture.”
“When I read this, I thought about the guys and gals I work with. One of the telltale signs of an individual with autism or a developmental disability is a difficulty in communicating. Individuals on the severe end of the autism spectrum, especially, can be completely non-verbal. Imagine not being able to effectively communicate with those around you? How disheartening must that barrier be? But then I see their faces each morning as they come in for work to a common ground, a place of compassion, learning, and opportunity. Each and every day their smiles as they walk through that door communicate to me 1,000 words. Good Reasons is their community, it’s their language, and their reason for celebration. I just love that,” says Sylvester.
Sylvester plans for the Good Reasons line of treats to also appear in WFM’s White Plains store by the end of the summer.
